DTC News: A Special Message from Dave Bindelglass

We have only 38 days left to do everything we can to support Democrats up and down the ballot. This is the most critical election of our lives. The time to act is NOW to ensure a BLUE WAVE on Nov. 5.

Dear Fellow Democrats,

The November elections are quickly approaching and while there is enormous focus on the presidential race, I want to remind you of the critical importance in Easton of our local state assembly and state senate races.  This November we'll vote for our state representative --either the 135th House District or the 112th depending on where you live--and for state senator.

We first elected Anne Hughes to represent Easton in the 135th assembly district in 2018. This was a huge victory for the Democratic party in this traditionally Republican district. Anne has been a force in Hartford, and easily won reelection in 2020 and 2022. She is running again in 2024. Anne has built a reputation as a fierce advocate for constituents, a great collaborator with us on the Board of Selectman when we need an advocate at the state level, a champion for the environment and climate action, and a statewide defender of reproductive and voting rights. She has been an incredibly effective voice for Easton in Hartford.

In 2022, redistricting divided Easton into two assembly districts--the 135th (Anne's) and the 112th. Currently the 112th is held by Republican Tony Scott of Monroe. Easton's Beth Cliff, a Democrat, is challenging him. In the State Senate, Easton is currently represented by Republican Tony Hwang of Fairfield, who is being challenged by Democrat Rob Blanchard.

As you know, we have had tremendous success as Democrats, moving Easton from red to purple, then resoundingly to blue in 2023. The leadership in Hartford has taken notice of this and it has paid great dividends for our town, particularly with the awarding of state funds. In just the last year we have received grants for renovating our tennis courts and for the EMS renovation. These are directly the result of relationships forged by Anne Hughes and me with leaders in Hartford.

For our EMS grant application Anne brought both the secretary of the Office of Policy and Management, the staff agency to the Governor, and the house majority leader to town so they could see for themselves how much our EMS building needed to be renovated.  That is how things get done!  Our EMS grant was the direct result of Anne Hughes working together with our team here in Easton. And when it was announced, you can see from the picture below that Anne alone stood with us at the bond commission hearing where the grant was approved.

While both Tony Scott and Tony Hwang have claimed credit for this grant, the reality is that it took a lot of hard work by Democrats.  Let me assure you that while both are nice people, they cannot help Easton in the same ways.  That takes Democrats in office.

I would ask you to keep this in mind and share these thoughts with your friends as we approach election day.

Thank You,

David Bindelglass, First Selectman
